Jason Hayes couldn’t quite comprehend what he was seeing. This was impossible, right? The young detective rubbed his eyes furiously, then stared down at the manila folder that had just been dropped onto his desk by the Sarge. No, his eyes hadn’t been playing tricks on him. There, staring back at him from the grainy black and white mug shot stapled to the front of the folder was one of America’s most wanted: Thomas Erskine.
Better known as “The Crystal Killer”, Erskine was popularized by the media for leaving the bodies of his victims, always young, male, and sodomized, in places where strung prisms could cast dancing rainbows across their pale, dead skin. The murders had gone unsolved for months, and by the time Erskine was finally ID’d by forensics, he’d dropped off the face of the earth. Though investigators had been searching relentlessly, no one had seen hide nor hair of the killer, at least as far as Jason was aware.
There had to have been some sort of break in the case. The brown-haired man jumped to his feet and snatched the envelope off his desk, jogging to catch up with his superior.
“Hey—Hey Sarge!”
Sergeant Anthony Albright paused in the doorway to his office and turned, looking down at his charge. “Yes, Agent Hayes?” He was generally a stern-looking man, but one corner of his mouth twitched upward at the unmasked excitement on the detective’s face.
“Mind explaining this, Sarge?” He held up the folder.
“I take it I don’t need to brief you on the details…”
Jason shook his head enthusiastically. “No sir!”
Sergeant Albright grunted in acknowledgement. “We received an anonymous tip this morning as to Erskine’s possible whereabouts. I’m putting you and Agent Morgan on the case. It’s going to require some good undercover work, and since McFadden’s team is out of commission, you two are the best I have. I’ve included the updated information about the tip in that file, so go have yourselves a pow-wow and report back to me when you’re ready to move. Tonight’s all we’ve got, understood?”
“Yes sir!” Jason turned and headed back toward his desk. He could feel the excitement bubbling up in the pit of his stomach like a thousand ravenous butterflies. This was a goldmine of a case, something every rookie dreams of heading up. Solving a case like this would mean an instant promotion. Reaching his desk, the detective sat down and took a deep breath before looking over at his partner, Agent Nathaniel Morgan, who was seated at his own desk nearby. “Hey Nate, Guess what?”
“It’s Nathaniel.” Agent Morgan looked up at his partner, quirking one neat eyebrow. He could read the enthusiasm on Jason’s face, and like a good detective, took the proffered question as a personal challenge.
“Well now, let me see…” He looked Jason up and down, scrutinizing him. “Judging by the fresh file you’re clutching, and the fact that you just came back from the Sarge’s office with said file, I’d say you’ve just been put in charge of a major case.”
Jason pouted, which was an interesting thing to see a twenty-seven year old man do. “You take the fun out of everything.”
“Was I right?”
“Partly.” The pout transformed into a grin. “We just got put in charge of a major case, partner.” With that, Jason reached over and slapped the file down on Nate’s desk.
The black-haired man picked up the file and opened it, instantly beginning to peruse the file’s contents. “The Crystal Killer, huh? Intriguing…”
Jason watched his partner pour over the material, overcome with a sense of awe at the man’s professionalism. Nate’s mossy green eyes swept the text, computer-like in their analysis. Though he was only a few years older than Jason, Nate had a great deal of experience. He was a brilliant detective, and Jason always felt lucky to have been partnered with him. Agent Morgan was the yin to his yang, the Bonnie to his Clyde, the see to his saw--
“Oh god.”
“What’s wrong?” Jason refocused on Nate as the groan interrupted his thoughts.
Nate looked up from the file, his eyes flashing in the light of the desk lamp.
“He’s going to be at a gay bar.”

Oh ho ho! Wherever could this be leading to I wonder? Stay tuned to find out.
