Oh, not that kind of length, you naughty reader. <3
On a more serious note, I would like to talk a little bit about how long erotic short stories should be. When I first started writing erotica, I was mentored by a few fellow authors who provided me with some ground rules to follow when self-publishing.
First, as most of you know, in order for an author to receive 70% of their royalties, ePublishers require the price of the book to be set at $2.99 or higher. Any lower than this, and the author receives only a paltry 30%; literally pennies. That's why you see a majority of titles selling for this price. Now, I was told that for a title to be worth the price, it should be at least 3,000 words, which is really pretty short. Most of my titles are between 5k and 10k words.
Having received a few critiques on the length of my work, I have a question to ask. As a reader, purchaser, or fellow author, what is an appropriate length for the $2.99 price point? What do you feel is worth the three bucks? Does it matter as long as the plot is strong, and the story doesn't feel rushed? Or do you feel cheated if your erotica isn't a hundred pages long?
As I muddle through my revisions, and gear up to write new stories, I'd like to have an idea of what readers want in my erotic shorts stories.
Any and all feedback is greatly appreciated. <3
